Blue Fire

Fire has always had a great attraction for humans and has been an important component in technical and cultural development. If you want to have a particularly romantic meal, have a candlelight dinner and enjoy the warm light of the candle. In this experiment we would like to show you something new: how to make blue fire.

This experiment includes burning liquids and is therefore very dangerous! Young scientists must not try any part of this experiment without their parents!

As with all experiments with fire, you must be extremely careful. It is best to do the experiment outside, where there is nothing flammable nearby and always have a fire extinguisher ready.

Materials you need for this experiment:

fire extinguisher

Hopefully you'll never need it, but once you start experimenting with fire, you'll always need to have a fire extinguisher handy.

Plate

The plate serves as a non-flammable base for the experiment

Disinfectant gel

Disinfectant gel consists mainly of alcohol and therefore burns with a blue flame.

How to make the experiment:

Put some disinfectant gel in the middle of the plate. The first time you do the experiment, use only a little disinfectant gel to get a small and easier to control fire. Your parents will also be grateful if you don't use the most expensive plate for the experiment.

To light the disinfectant gel, you should use a lighter with the front part as long as possible so that you don't burn yourself if the gel suddenly starts to burn.

Then if you dim the light a little you will see a beautiful blue flame. However, you should always leave it bright enough so that you can orientate yourself in the room and not accidentally knock over anything that could fall into the fire. You must also be able to see where the fire extinguisher is at all times and how to release any fuses on the fire extinguisher.

There are also some videos on the internet where people put the disinfectant gel on their hand and then set the hand on fire. DON'T DO THAT! The fire is just as hot as you would expect from a fire and that heat directly on your skin isn't necessarily the best idea.

Have fun experimenting!
